Spreading the word of Gender Mainstreaming through the Region

The eight strategic areas of the Gender Equality Plan of the Region of Central Macedonia, were presented on the initiative of the Deputy Regional Governor of Pieria and President of the Equality Committee, Mrs. Sophia Mavridou, at an online Event with the Deputy Minister of Labour Social Affairs, responsible for Demographic Policy and the Family, Mrs. Maria Syrengela, as an honorary guest.

During her speech, Mrs.  Mavridou stressed that digital technology offers highly skilled jobs and provides high pay that could contribute, among other things, to the elimination of gender pay differentials. In the fields of research, technology and innovation, as hundreds of thousands of relevant jobs will open up in the coming period at European Union and global level. In this context, the initiative for the creation of the Innovation Centre for Women, #GIL4W has been announced.  

The initiative aims at the thematic cooperation of governmental, social and market actors and their commitment that the adoption of technology and innovation will not cause an increase in social and economic inequality. Its creation will be based on the UN model for Sustainable Development, while the partner organization ECWT will cooperate for its development through the transfer of know-how from the corresponding application in Norway. The deputy minister called for the need for a joint effort in this direction and therefore welcomes the initiative of the Region of Central Macedonia. She stressed that efforts should be made to address the shortage of women across the professional career spectrum and in particular in the areas of qualifications.

The activation of a ‘territorial mobilisation’: Key territorial actors of the regional R&I system, as well as social actors and citizens are mobilized within the context of TeRRItoria to co-implement the regional GEP. New coalitions of actors (Quadruple Helix coalitions) already emerged in RCM during the co-design and lead to a fruitful exchange of experiences, while the commitment of all these actors was heavily acknowledged. 

Within our next stepsis the Capitalization of the project which starts with Introducing the Gender perspective in S3. Namely a declaration of principles in the text of the upcoming Strategy, encouraging investments that exploit women’s potential, promoting women’s involvement in STEM sciences, cultivating a culture of citizen participation, and gender mainstreaming in research by R&I bodies.  In addition to these are the targeting the growth of women in STEM sciences, setting up innovative enterprises, R&I enterprises in positions of responsibility social innovation ROP funding actions female entrepreneurship position of eligibility criterion reward.

The Region of Central Macedonia as a public body has commenced the procedure of the Development and Adoption of a GEP in public authorities. The stages of this process entail first of all Audit or Review which means describing and assessing the gender situation within the organization, Planning which means defining the changes that are necessary and promoting organizational change in a direction that embraces gender equality. Finally, the Implementation of the proposed changes is followed by Monitoring and Self-Assessment.
